The Riverwalk and Our Trip to Texas:
Running several miles thorough downtown San Antonio, is the San Antonio River and the beautiful Riverwalk. Cobblestone walkways (with an occasional footbridge) allow for strolling by shops, restaurants and hotels. Very friendly Texans stand outside their eateries inviting passerby's to sit down at their place for a while. Each restaurant has outside tables also. There were two kind of unfortunate things that occured the days we were there. The first was an arctic cold front, which was beyond anybody's control, of course. However, this is the week that they drain the river and clean up all of the mud. The same week each year as the Army All American Game. So, we didn't get to float down the river in boats from beginning to end. But, then, maybe that is why our room was only $112.00 per night rather than $230.00 or more.
Museums:
We enjoyed walking through the Wax Museum. It was an interesting display of traditional American culture, with movie stars, fairy tells and the story of Jesus. We didn't go through the haunted house, though we thought about it. I was too chicken. Here is the website link: http://sanantonio.ripleys.com/wax-works/
Even though I don't really like watching this stuff on t.v., this was a really neat museum. It was huge, with three stories, and it was jammed packed full of artifacts and weird stuff. Located next to the Plaza Wax Museum, we bought tickets to both attractions for around $22.00 a piece. These were right across the street from our hotel, The Hyatt Regency, and kitty corner to the Alamo. The Hyatt Regency is very convenient to everything, even to the Alamodome. Here is the website for Ripley's: http://sanantonio.ripleys.com/

Combine 2010:
Last week, the best 500 high school players across the U.S. were invited to attend the Army All American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. Coaches, scouts and recruiters were also there, watching and taking notes of the talent on the field. Most of the players were seniors and juniors, but 15 sophomores were also invited. Our grandson, Tyler Matthews was one of them. Our grandson Cameron is an upcoming football star in his own right, and he also participated in the "Combine" for the younger kids.
Here is a slide show of Tyler, #90 and Cameron, #23 at "Combine" where they were tested and showed off their talents as quarterbacks. Also, there are some pictures of the Army All American Game that held in the Alamodome in San Antonio on Saturday, which was televised.
This is a huge deal to the players who are invited to play. Many players announced their intentions Saturday on which college they were going to attend.
There were a lot of them who had planned on going to USC, but now that their head coach, Pete Carroll, is going to leave the school to coach the Seattle Seahawks, several players changed their minds.
Grandsons Garrett, Johnny and Collin's basketball games in Olympia last weekend. This was Collin's first game as his team's captain. They are all jocks and did a great job!
Johnson Family Slide Shows:
This is a book that my Dad's Aunt Maud made for him when he was a little boy. He is now 73. It covers the time when he was small and moved from Arkansas to Washington. When WWII broke out, they moved back to Arkansas, and then returned to the West Coast. Aunt Maud was a poet and she was funny! She used Christmas cards, cartoons, and pictures from magazines to write this book.
"Ralph, when you read this, remember your Father's nick name was DAD. When he was a little boy, he got a new pair of overalls that said made like DAD. They nick named him DAD. He wouldn't answer until they called him DAD. Ralph Lee. He was just a tiny tot when his parents moved to the Henry Wright place on Norwood Prairie from the Craig place near Wedington where he was born. They then moved from the Wright place to the Edgar Moss place on highway 16. While living on the moss place, Kenneth Dewayne came to be Ralph Lee's little brother. But they didn't stay but a year till they took high fever to go west. And there they went landing at Long View, Washington. While there another visit from the stork bringing Ralph Lee this time a little sister. They call her Loveta Carrol. While there December 1941 Pearl Harbor was attack by the Japs. Then the U.S. join in the game. In the town Ralph Lee and his father, mother, brother, sister live in was so close to the enemy (the Japs) they practiced the Black Out System in case the enemy came over the lights would be out and the town could not be so easily found and blowed up. As there were several Arkansasians there they all began to think of home so strong, back to Arkansas they landed. It wasn't long till: Ralph Lee landed in Arkansas with brother sister paw & maw. Dad working in Washington about a year; He quit the lumber mill with trembling fear. Of the Japanese who made a rade - that caused the Arkansawins to be afraid. For the Arkies could not get about in a town with lights all out.
So the Arkies quickly loaded their cars, filled the tanks and pumped the tars. Back to old Arkansas we heard them comin. "Home Sweet Home" they were hummin. They stayed with home folks a little while. One day Dad said with a smile; "I am going back for there is not a Jap, that I can't whip", said Ralph Lee's pap. So out west they were found to go, loading their cars till the springs went low. They did not stop till they got to St. Helen; Gee, I'll bet they are "biggens" Dad is tellin. I can see Ralph Lee looking up at his Paw saying: "Daddy when are we going back to Arkansas?" You must be contented said Ralph Lee's paw. We are never going back to Arkansas. Away the child turns he is a very sweet boy, he is to his Mother & Dad a bushel of joy. He has a brother and a little sister too. They don't tear up their faces crying boo, hoo. But most of the the day laughing having a good time. Say folks, don't you think they are just fine?"
